This album is what I imagine a trip through the universe into Bardo sounds like, a real space odyssey. Flourescent Bells oscillates between optimism and morose meditations with galactic frequencies in the distance.

“[MOSS 007] SAM GAS CAN - “Life of a Dog”

Sam Gas Can brews a blend of bedroom pop that is both subtly humorous and deeply personal, operating in the grey area between intimacy and obscurity. From the tape recorder confessional of “How Does A Dog Know How To Get Big?” to the punkish blast of “Look At A Rat, Look At A Snake,” or the droning mantra of “I feel Like Crying,” the listener is always left with a feeling of genuine sincerity. This might be Sam’s boldest pop statement to date and I couldn’t be more proud to release it.

Bastian Void - Fluorescent Bells 8.2

               Bastian Void reminisces for the exploratory electronics of yore. On ‘Fluorescent Bells’ the textures owe a debt to early electronic musicians. The album’s inquisitive nature is buttressed by the attention to melody. For as abstract and weird as these pieces get (and they get pretty weird) they retain a sense of humanity. Sound for the sake of sound is one of the goals but not exclusively. Rather the goal appears to be merging the strange sounds with the beauty of the natural world. And Bastian’s steadfast belief in the power of electronics makes it a positive experience.

                ‘Atrium / St. Vincent’ gently introduces the listener to this sea of sound. From the gentle waves comes a ridiculously rudimentary beat. Upon the establishment of the beat the sound expands to an unbelievable degree. Low end on this song sounds amazing. Drone mixes with the melody as the beat continues as if on another planet. The opposite of this is ‘Respirit’ which is nearly tragic in its sound. With constant pinging it is a tense dramatic piece that appears to be almost defeated. By the end is where things get jaw-dropping. On ‘Fluorescent Bells’ the experimentation in the beginning gives away to a lighter side. Afterwards is the album’s heart and soul ‘Hyperbole Stasis Daze’. Here Bastian Void channels the spirit of Keith Fullerton Whitman. Slow gradual metamorphosis of the sound is perfectly calibrated creating a perfect cloud of sounds.

                Overall this is a strong lovely tribute to a time when experimental and emotion were one.

Respirit, pulled from Bastian Void’s release Fluorescent Bells, takes distorted and almost haunting synths to create abstract beauty.

The textures on this track range from comfortably soothing to abrasive with bubbling synthesizers and harsher noise combining to create this oddly beautiful blend of sounds that gives off a great amount of feeling. The entire song has this really dramatic tone to it, almost feeling fitting for a movie scene. Airy textures create a huge deal of atmosphere here but then odder and harsher synths begin to fade in and out, growing in intensity each time to build on the emotion.

It’s definitely an interesting approach to synth music and Bastian Void is able to pull it off well. Beyond the distorted sounds of decay and crazy synths it still feels like there’s a lot of heart behind the track and that’s what ties it all together.
